The Ultimate 4-Step Pickleball Drill for Consistent Kitchen Control

Are you tired of losing fast-paced kitchen battles? Do you find yourself hitting easy dinks into the net or popping up speed-ups for your opponents to smash. To play high-level pickleball, you need to move past “recreational play” habits and start drilling with intention. Whether you are a tennis player adapting your court biomechanics or an intermediate player looking to break through a rating plateau, consistency at the Non-Volley Zone (NVZ) or Kitchen is non-negotiable. Below, we break down our signature 4-Step NVZ Partner Pickleball Drill designed to build muscle memory, clean up your paddle mechanics, and help you dominate the kitchen.

The 4-Step Kitchen Pickleball Drill Progression

Run each step of this routine with your drilling partner for 2 to 3 minutes before your games to instantly sharpen your touch and reflexes.

Step 1: Forehand Cross-Court Dinks (Touch & Pacing)

Start by establishing your rhythm. Cross-court dinking gives you a larger margin of error over the lowest part of the net.

  • The Technical Tweak: Keep your paddle face open and push the ball using your shoulder. Eliminate any wrist flick—a quiet wrist is the secret to a highly consistent dink.

Step 2: Backhand Cross-Court Dinks (Agressive vs. Defense)

This step is a game-changer, especially for former tennis players learning to adapt their backhand slice.

  • The Technical Tweak: Use a compact two-handed backhand to drag aggressive, low-to-high dinks and apply pressure. The moment you are pushed out of position, switch to a relaxed one-handed slice backhand to open your paddle face, absorb the ball’s pace, and reset safely.

Step 3: Fast Hand Fighting (Paddle Ready Position)

Pickleball is won and lost in the firefights. This step simulates quick speed-ups at the kitchen line.

  • The Technical Tweak: Stay low in your athletic stance. Keep your paddle up and out in front of your chest in a compact ready position. Minimize your backswing entirely—rely on short, punchy blocks instead of big swings.

Step 4: Resets (Softening the Ball) & Counter-Attacks

When your opponent speeds up a ball that you cannot cleanly attack, your job is to reset the point.

  • The Technical Tweak: Soften your grip tension to a 3 out of 10 as you block. This “soft hands” technique absorbs the speed of the ball, deadening it perfectly back into your opponent’s kitchen. Only counter-attack when they leave the ball high.
